National Theatre Puppetry Workshop
Devised by puppeteers and actors from the National Theatre, this workshop is designed to give students hands-on experience and understanding of how to create characters through the use of puppetry techniques employed in the production of War Horse. Using the process actors underwent in the rehearsal room in London, participants learn the movement, breath and skills required when operating puppets in the theatre. The workshop culminates in an improvised scene from the play.
Writing for the Stage
Beginning with a short performance piece written by a professional writer commissioned by the National Theatre, this workshop explores the specific techniques required when creating an imaginative piece of writing for the theatre. We look at the process involved in translating ideas from the imagination to paper and from paper to action to provide an exciting theatrical event, before embarking on individual and group writing exercises, looking at themes from War Horse from an Australian perspective.
Creating Puppets for Plays
This practical workshop provides hands-on experience to explore the craft involved in designing and making a puppet for use in the theatre. Based on the techniques employed by Handspring Puppet Company, the genius behind the horse puppets in the production, participants will have the chance to create a puppet of their own using materials adapted from the original concept. The workshop will also include a performance of a specially commissioned piece of theatre that employs puppetry as a means of bringing characters to life
Song (s) and Soundscapes
This workshop examines some of the cellular ideas that form the building blocks of composition used by the musical creators of the production. It begins with a short performance that incorporates song as a powerful theatrical medium and then takes the folk songs from War Horse as a creative starting point for participants to develop their own work. Participants will adapt these processes to create their own unique compositions, based on our own Australian warhorse themes and stories.
